LDYS Bloggers

Spent this evening wondering how many LDYS members have a blog. So I started by taking a look at the Executive. Vice-Chair Campaigns Simon Wright and Vice-Chair Finance Will Howells plus General Executive Members Jade Farrington, Thomas Paul, Vivienne Raper and Gez Smith all have blogs.

Simon's blog is usually about things happening in the Ward he represents and North Norfolk .

Will, Jade , Tom and Gez post their opinions on politics and current affairs. Vivienne and Gez have not posted anything for ages but I hope that changes soon because the first blog I ever read was Vivienne's and it was great. I hope it returns soon.

James Graham is the Organisational Vice Chair of the Green Liberal Democrats and a member of the Federal Executive of the Liberal Democrats. James also occasionally updates Land Notes and it is James who is responsible for International Liberal Democrat Meetup Day.

Mark Ramsden who is Chair of West Midlands Liberal Democrat Youth and Students also has a brilliant blog. Mark like myself is in his second year of A-levels and intends to start a degree in Politics later this year.

Martyn Hencher who is Treasurer and Webmaster of West Midlands Liberal Democrat Youth and Students also has a great blog. Martyn is in the third year of a German and History degree at the Universities of Sheffield and Frankfurt.

Edis Bevan, James Blanchard and Sara Grey all have good blogs.

Including myself that makes thirteen LDYS bloggers but I am sure there are many more. There are certainly many more LibDem bloggers.

You may have noticed that I have learnt to add links in my blog so I am making the most of them sooner or later I am going to do a blog in which all the words will be links.

Things have changed

You may noticed that my blog looks a little different (links bar).
Mark reccomended that I change my links around a little and I have followed. Please use the links to fellow LibDem bloggers blogs. My personal bests are Jade, Mark and ofcourse Martyn.

Toilet Papering

I have been unable to post anything since the day after I started this because my computer broke down and I have been busy with a combination of College work, politics and wedding in the family.

Just wanted to post today to let people know that Unite Against Fascism are organising a rally this Sunday to protest against Jean Marie Le Pen's visit to Birmingham to raise funds for the BNP euro election campaign. The rally is in Victoria Square in Birmingham City Centre and will have prominent Anti-Fascist speakers and musicians. I will be attending a meeting this evening and will try updating you on what will be happening on the day.

Many of my friends in LDYS have been recounting why they joined the Liberal Democrats so I thought I would start my blog by doing the same and since it is just over a year it would be nice.

When I returned from Malawi in May 2002 I was a little disappointed to see that the outside world was doing very little for a very poor country which had problems with maize shortage which saw many come to death due to hunger.

Paul Marsden, Liberal Democrat MP for Shrewsbury and Atcham then announced that he would be flying to Malawi in Southern Africa for one week to raise awareness of the famine that threatened thirteen million people. This was my introduction to the Liberal Democrats.

Before I travelled to Malawi in June 2001 I had been interested in politics but had never ever thought of joining a party.

Since Paul Marsden's visit I always followed what the Liberal Democrats were up in relation the issues that interested me (Constitutional Affairs, Education, Foreign & Commonwealth Relations and International Development).

Soon after I realised that the Liberal Democrats were a serious party and that they were the real opposition to the Labour government. The Conservatives who were then under the leadership of Iain Duncan Smith (altogether now... who?) never really had any replies or alternatives to what the government were up to and just seem to disunited to be able to do anything. So then on 17th February 2003 while on the Liberal Democrats website I decided that I would join the party. I paid my £5 membership using my credit card and on Monday 24th I received my membership card and after two weeks wrote to my local party membership secretary that I had joined the party. Soon after Councillor Jon Hunt who was then a candidate for the Perry Barr ward in the council election wrote to me to say that there was a local party meeting soon, which I attended and as they say the rest is History.

Just over a year on I am very pleased I took the step that I did on 17th February 2003.
